First time for a custom fishing rod?

Every rod on a retailers rack will catch fish, of course.  The difference between rods built in large identical quantities in a factory somewhere vs. a custom built rod one-at-a-time is immense.  No two custom rods should be alike, just like no two people are alike, except for identical twins!  Custom fishing rods offer so much more than anything found in a sporting goods store, Especially one built by LakeLady.  Let’s hook up!

First, there must be a conversation between the angler and the builder.  A needed activity to determine the “what”, “where”, and “why”!  Sure the sales person at the sport shop will maybe ask these questions too, but he does not dive deep into the subtle necessary questions.  All he finds out is either spin, casting or fly rod…. and maybe what species is targeted.  Then he begins to “sell his goods”.  All of those rods on the rack are exactly the same.  No deviation at all in the construction of the rod.

A custom fishing rod in years past was a sign of affluence, or snobbery.  Today, just the opposite.  Rods are built to the exact specifications of the angler, for the species targeted, and the technique to be used.  Things like handle diameter and length, then handle materials come into play.  Then we think about reel seats.  An important part of any rod to hold tightly expensive reels to the rod.  These materials can be plastic as are most retail seats, or upgrade to carbon fiber or 6061-T6 aluminum, toray graphite, woven texalium fiberglass with woven aluminum, or maybe 3K woven graphite a specialized material that enhances sensitivity and give that extra bit of feel while maintaining needed strength.

Once we understand what the new custom rod will be, the material that this rod is built from are determined.  Quality between manufactures can and does vary widely.  There are exceptions of course, but most retail fishing rods are built off-shore using cheap labor and sometimes inferior quality materials.
